You will also be able to ask any questions and engage in meaningful discussions about the Company. \nOver Lunch\, the Master and some of our more established Liverymen will be available to discuss events – both within our Company and within the City – and explain ways to get more involved. Our Company serves as a valuable networking platform for industry members with varied events organised throughout the year. \nWe are pleased to welcome new members to our Company\, and the Master and Wardens very much hope you will be able to attend this special lunch. \nMore on the history of Watermen’s Hall:  \nThe Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames was founded in 1514\, when King Henry VIII gave Royal Assent to an Act of Parliament regulating watermen\, wherrymen and bargemen.  In 1700\, under a new Act of Parliament\, the Company of Watermen was granted authority to regulate Lightermen as well. \nWatermen were responsible for ferrying people across and along the Thames\, often in small rowing boats known as wherries. Lightermen handled cargo\, transporting goods to and from ships moored in the river aboard flat-bottomed barges known as lighters. Together\, these skilled professionals have formed the backbone of river life and trade in London for centuries. \nThis Hall was not the first Hall that the Company occupied\, but it is the first one to be owned and purpose-built for the Company. It was constructed on a site previously occupied by a tavern\, a coffee house\, and a domestic building\, reflecting the vibrant social and commercial history of the area. \nWilliam Blackburn (1750–1790)\, a silver medallist of the Royal Academy\, was commissioned to design a small and modest Hall\, and created what is now a wonderful example of Georgian architecture\, complete with the Parlour\, Court Room and a magnificent staircase. If you look at the ceiling of the Court Room\, you can see stylistic similarities to the work of Josiah Wedgwood\, who is believed to have been a friend of Blackburn and may have influenced the design. \nThe Hall opened for business in 1780\, and it remains one of the few surviving examples of Blackburn’s work. In two and half centuries\, the Hall has seen many changes\, including restoration work following World War II completed in 1950\, a new decorated ceiling for the Parlour Room in 1961\, and a major extension opened by HRH Princess Alexandra in 1984 that doubled the size of the Hall. \nToday\, the Hall continues to serve as a gathering place for the Company’s Freemen and apprentices\, who come together here in the spirit of fellowship and tradition. We welcome visitors to enjoy this beautiful and historic space through tours\, events\, lunches\, and afternoon teas\, and the Hall serves as a vibrant base for many heritage events that keep our rich river legacy alive.

After completing her training in Chester and qualifying as a solicitor in London\, she specialised in corporate finance and law within the investment and insurance sectors\, eventually becoming an associate partner. She paused her career to raise three children\, continuing as an employment law consultant until her youngest was born. Her older children work in the City\, and her youngest studies Theology. In 2012\, she earned the FT Non-Executive Diploma to develop a diverse career and\, more recently\, qualified as a Spiritual Director\, offering space for spiritual reflection. She is a Freeman of the Goldsmiths’ Company\, sits on the Advisory Committee of the Sheriffs’ and Recorders’ Fund\, and as Sheriff’s Consort is actively involved with the Old Bailey\, inspired by her ancestor Elizabeth Fry\, the prison reformer. \nPotted History of Furniture Makers’ Hall \nThe Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers referred to as the Furniture Makers’ Company was established as a guild in 1951 and granted livery status in 1963. It is the 83rd Livery Company in the order of precedence of the City of London’s Livery Companies and received its Royal Charter in 2013. Its Hall\, built in 1882 by E A Gruning\, features Victorian architecture and original fittings\, including an ornate oak staircase. The hall’s original tenants were the Leipzig-based banking firm Fruhling and Goschen. During WWII\, the Hall sustained superficial damage from German bombing\, unlike the nearby historic Dutch Church\, which was completely destroyed. Today\, the Company serves as the central organisation\, charity\, and patron of the British furnishing industry. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is one of the great ceremonies of the livery year when Guildhall will be full to capacity to see the next Lord Mayor formally elected. All liverymen are encouraged to attend Common Hall on Tuesday\, 29th day of September by 11.45 a.m. for the Election of the 698th Lord Mayor\, Alderman Timothy Russell Hailes MStJ JP FKC who served as Aldermanic Sheriff of the City of London for 2017/18\, is Lord Mayor-elect of London for 2026/27 and will assume office\, subject to election in November 2026. \nATTENDANCE \nLiverymen who attend Common Hall need to have been a member of the Company prior to 31st May 2025 and must be registered in the Electoral Services Register. One of its treasures includes a 1684 carved wooden statue of Sir William Walworth\, the famous Fishmonger who in 1381\, as Lord Mayor of London\, ended the Peasants’ Revolt by stabbing Wat Tyler in the presence of Richard II. The dagger he used is also on show. Pietro Annigoni’s well-known first portrait of Her Majesty The Queen hangs gracefully in the Court Drawing Room and the Company has an impressive collection of 17th- and 18th-century silver\, an embroidered 15th-century funeral pall\, portraits by George Romney and river scenes by Samuel Scott. The imposing Banqueting Hall\, designed in 1831 – 35 with its high curved ceiling\, glittering with gold and its commanding portraits of royalty and past Prime Wardens\, shimmering chandeliers and historic coats of arms. \nThe Company of Pikemen and Musketeers \nThe Company of Pikemen & Musketeers is a ceremonial sub-unit of The Honourable Artillery Company (‘The HAC’)\, the oldest regiment in the British Army\, which traces its origins back to a charter granted by King Henry VIII in 1537. \nThe Pikemen & Musketeers are uniformed and equipped as members of The HAC were in the 1640s. Governed by a Royal Warrant from the late HM The Queen\, the Company is tasked with providing a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London\, when on official business. This includes escorting the State Coach during the Lord Mayor’s Show and forming carpet guards for state banquets and dinners at Guildhall and Mansion House. The Company also provides guards for dinners at livery halls\, at Armoury House\, the regimental headquarters of the HAC\, and provides displays of 17th century arms drill\, both at home and overseas. \nOnly veteran members with proven efficient service in The HAC’s Army Reserve Regiment are eligible to join the Company \n\nCarpet Guard provided by our affiliation Beckenham & Penge Sea Cadets\, part of the UK’s oldest nautical youth charity\, giving young people qualifications and experience such as sailing\, windsurfing\, rock climbing\, camping and music to enhance teamwork\, self-confidence\, commitment and self-discipline.\nMusical Entertainment by London Banqueting Ensemble\n\nThe London Banqueting Ensemble was founded in 2002 by musician Steve Fletcher\, a former military musician who served as principal trumpeter with the Band and Orchestra of the Royal Artillery. The imposing Banqueting Hall\, designed in 1831 – 35 with its high curved ceiling\, glittering with gold and its commanding portraits of royalty and past Prime Wardens\, shimmering chandeliers and historic coats of arms. \nThe Company of Pikemen and Musketeers \nThe Company of Pikemen & Musketeers is a ceremonial sub-unit of The Honourable Artillery Company (‘The HAC’)\, the oldest regiment in the British Army\, which traces its origins back to a charter granted by King Henry VIII in 1537. \nThe Pikemen & Musketeers are uniformed and equipped as members of The HAC were in the 1640s. Governed by a Royal Warrant from the late HM The Queen\, the Company is tasked with providing a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London\, when on official business. This includes escorting the State Coach during the Lord Mayor’s Show and forming carpet guards for state banquets and dinners at Guildhall and Mansion House. The Company also provides guards for dinners at livery halls\, at Armoury House\, the regimental headquarters of the HAC\, and provides displays of 17th century arms drill\, both at home and overseas. \nOnly veteran members with proven efficient service in The HAC’s Army Reserve Regiment are eligible to join the Company \nCarpet Guard provided by our affiliation Beckenham & Penge Sea Cadets\, part of the UK’s oldest nautical youth charity\, giving young people qualifications and experience such as sailing\, windsurfing\, rock climbing\, camping and music to enhance teamwork\, self-confidence\, commitment and self-discipline. \nMusical Entertainment by London Banqueting Ensemble \nThe London Banqueting Ensemble was founded in 2002 by musician Steve Fletcher\, a former military musician who served as principal trumpeter with the Band and Orchestra of the Royal Artillery.
