The word “Cutler” signifies a maker or seller of knives and weapons with a cutting edge and later the emphasis shifted from implements of war to cutlery and domestic items such as razors and scissors. \nThe earliest recorded reference to Cutlers’ Hall dates from 1285; it is the fifth of their buildings erected in 1882 – its former hall having been demolished when its land was acquired by the Metropolitan and District Railway. It had itself replaced an earlier building destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. \nThe present building contains on the outside of the wall facing Warwick Lane a finely carved terracotta frieze by the Sheffield sculptor Benjamin Creswick. The most prominent feature of the entrance hall is a stained-glass window erected in memory of Captain F.G. Boot a great benefactor of the company. It shows Henry V granting the company its original Charter in 1416. The Court Room contains portraits of company members who served as Lord Mayor of London and a Coat of Arms which survived the Great Fire. Its stunning Livery Hall boasts a splendid Victorian hammerbeam roof. Around the walls are shields carried by members of the court in the Lord Mayor’s processions in 1834 and 1984 when company members were elected as Mayor.
