First female Master for WCoBM

On 24th October 2014 Gill Moore, Executive Chairman of builders’ merchant WJ Lewis, was installed as our new Master

The installation ceremony was at Mansion House, home to The Lord Mayor of London and honorary member of WCoBM Alderman Fiona Woolf CBE, whose one year term as Lord Mayor ended in November.

The ceremony was a particularly notable occasion because Gill is the first female Master of WCoBM. The installation was followed by a prestigious White Tie dinner to celebrate. Fiona Woolf and her Consort Nicholas Woolf were guest speakers. In November 2013 Fiona became the second female to be The Lord Mayor of London. The Mansion House was therefore a fitting venue with two females at the helm!

Gill became a Freeman of the Company on 18th June 2004 and was made a Liveryman on 26th October of the same year. The Master says: “My installation ceremony and dinner made for an unforgettable evening. It was a superb venue with 300 members and guests. I’m also proud to be the first female Master of the Livery. In what is still a male dominated industry, I feel it’s quite an achievement!

“My aim as Master in the next 12 months is to carry on the good work of Masters before me, and continue to drive the key objectives of our Livery. These include raising awareness of the importance of builders’ merchants to the UK economy; and promoting and increasing our charitable fund – our close links with the IoBM and BMF enables us to support and recognise the achievements of young merchants. We also support the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and a range of other worthy charities. And last but not least, encouraging members to get involved and attend our events, which are organised throughout the year. WCoBM provides an excellent platform for our members and their guests to socialise and discuss business, and exchange information and views. It’s ‘probably’ the best networking platform in the industry for senior people to meet and build relationships. We host events in historic Livery Halls and other prestigious and unique venues in the City to encourage networking between merchants, supplier members and their guests.

I will ensure we remain active in the industry, and among senior and influential people in the City,” continues the Master. “It’s going to be a busy 12 months. My husband Dave and I will be doing a lot of commuting from our business in the North to London, but it’s a privilege to be Master and I’m looking forward to every single moment.”
