Merchanting: “A great sector to work in!”
Our Livery launched #BuildACareerWithoutLimits to ‘shout out’ for construction and communicate the amazing breadth of roles in merchanting and manufacturing.
WCoBM’s Its annual City & Awards Luncheon underpins the campaign. The event celebrates the achievements of BMF students that WCoBM supports in training and education through its charitable fund. This year, Adam Ryan of Andrews Building Supplies was awarded ‘Best Online Student’, presented by Master Dame Fiona Woolf DBE, DL.
In an interview with Adam, he talks about his experiences of working in the sector, how the course is benefitting his role, and his career ambitions.
- When did you join Andrews Building Supplies and how has your role developed?
- I started in July 2018 in sales. My role now is Business Development Manager.
- Were you involved in the industry before joining Andrews Building Supplies or are you new to the sector?
- I worked for a supplier to Andrews before joining the company. I was keen to grow my skills and felt I needed to move on in order to achieve this. So I approached MD Natasha Rose to see if there were role opportunities within Andrews. I made it clear that I was looking for progression and that is certainly what I’ve experienced since joining.
- How did you come to hear of the BMF course?
- As Natasha knew I was looking to develop, she made me aware of this course and it was the perfect opportunity for me. I’ve spent quite a bit of time on it as there is a lot of information to digest. Each module is approximately one hour long, with a test at the end. I believe I’ve completed around 70 so far.
- How has the course benefitted your learning and development, and your role?
- I have really expanded my knowledge across the board. It’s enabled me to explore different avenues at work and learn about other aspects of the business.
- What is your view of the builders’ merchant sector and the potential career opportunities for young people?
- A lot of people do not think about working with a merchant and I cannot see why. It’s a great sector to work in. So much potential to develop personal career goals.
- In your view, what are the benefits of working with a builders’ merchant?
- There are too many benefits to list here and the range of roles open to you would easily outlast any career. You would never be stuck in a role that doesn’t suit your skillset. I’m meeting many new people – some who have been in the industry for years and others that are just starting out. Everyone I’ve spoken to is driven by the opportunities that lie within construction, drawing from their own direct experiences or from what they’ve seen or heard elsewhere.
- What advice would you give to other young people considering a career in construction or the building materials sector?
- Do it! Without doubt it’s the best decision I’ve made. Working with a builders’ merchant gives me everything I will ever need. I will always be grateful to Andrews Building Supplies for this opportunity. I enjoy coming to work every day and being part of a successful company.
- What are your career ambitions?
- I see my future with Andrews and I would love to progress as high as possible within the company. I would like to give a big shout out to Natasha Rose and Jason Osman who have given me the opportunity to work for such a great business and for believing in me.
