Charlotte’s Apprenticeship Story with Travis Perkins
Charlotte joined Travis Perkins Tool Hire with no previous experience in the industry but has since gained a promotion and is now Assistant Tool Hire Manager at its Hemel Hempstead branch. Coming from the care sector, it was a really daunting move for Charlotte to join Travis Perkins’ Tool Hire team. But one year on, she has really found her feet within the Travis Perkins Group and has just bagged herself the title ‘2021 Apprentice of the Year’ at the Hire Awards of Excellence.
Charlotte is currently enrolled on Travis Perkins Certificate in Tool Hire Apprenticeship. This is one of the 38 Apprenticeships Travis offer at the Group, and it has given Charlotte everything she needs to quickly get to grips with her job responsibilities and has pushed her to learn more about the industry.
In an interview with Charlotte she explains to Travis how she has found her time with the Group so far.
What made you decide to join the Tool Hire team?
I wanted to try something out of my comfort zone. To my surprise, and absolute delight, I seemed to excel right from the start.
What were your first thoughts about making this career move to a new industry?
I was really nervous and found it very daunting. I started working as a domiciliary care worker when I was 18 years old. I later went on to train care workers in everything from moving and handling to first aid and safeguarding – you name it, and I probably taught it. It was a huge career change for me, but I was very excited about the change.
What are some of the new skills you’ve developed during your Apprenticeship?
I can’t even begin to sum up all the skills I have gained since the beginning of my Apprenticeship. Not only have I developed my workshop-based knowledge and product knowledge, but it has also given me great customer service skills, and has helped me to become more confident.
What has been your favourite part of your Apprenticeship?
My favourite part of my Apprenticeship has been the ability to network across the entire business.
Have you got any advice for something thinking of enrolling on an Apprenticeship?
Do it! I am so glad that I have had the opportunity to be on the course, and, given the chance, I would do an Apprenticeship again.

What has kept you working with the Group?
The support I have received has been amazing. So many people have been so happy to help me and really push me to develop myself, which is something I have never experienced before. I have built such a strong network already, and they are really helping me to realise my potential.
I can’t wait for what is next to come. I look forward to a very happy and long career with Travis Perkins!
