Comment from the Master on ‘A’ Level results and encouraging careers in builders’ merchanting

This year ‘A’ Level students were awarded the highest proportion of As and A*s since 2012. Despite changes to toughen exams in England, 26.4% of entries achieved top grades. We congratulate all students on their hard work.

Some will have a clear plan of what next – whether that’s University, College, going travelling or straight into employment. However, others who have yet to decide their career path will be seeking job opportunities and checking out what is available.

We would encourage all young students to consider a career with a stockist or supplier of building materials. There are tremendous opportunities for learning and development, including apprenticeships, further education and training. There’s also funding available if you need some financial support to further your learning. And it’s an extremely fun, well-paid and rewarding industry with the chance to experience varied roles, from finance, marketing and IT through store management, commercial, sales and much more.

The merchanting industry is a very attractive industry with extensive career prospects, which is why we launched our campaign #BuildACareerWithoutLimits. Compared with other industries the range of jobs is enormous, and the opportunities for learning new skills are excellent. Many in our industry have worked their way up, acquiring skills, qualifications and experience on the way to run some of the largest companies in the UK.
