Awarding young talent

Awareness of our Livery’s #BuildACareerWithoutLimits campaign is building as we reach out across the industry and into schools and colleges to highlight the career opportunities in the sector.

The campaign aims to encourage young people, apprentices and students to consider working with a builders’ merchant or a building materials’ manufacturer. It also aims to encourage and motivate those already working in our sector to learn and develop in their businesses. There is an amazing breadth of roles in merchanting and manufacturing, together with opportunities to start in one job and cross into another. It’s vital we make our sector look exciting and relevant to inspire and attract young people.

#BuildACareerWithoutLimits is supported by WCoBM bursaries of £2,000 a person to apprentices and students looking to work with a merchant or building materials’ manufacturer. The bursary is available to people working in the sector too. For details and how to apply, click here.

Recognising achievement

WCoBM’s City & Awards Luncheon underpins the campaign. Now in its 9th year, the awards celebrate the achievements of BMF students that WCoBM supports in training and education through its charitable fund. Liverymen are encouraged to invite ‘rising stars’ from their business to learn about the Livery and industry, and network with senior figures.

On 16th March the Luncheon was hosted at the spectacular Haberdashers’ Hall, an outstanding venue for prize winners and guests.

Winners of this year’s BMF students awards were George Donnelly of C & W Berry, Mason Evans of Manningham Concrete and Adam Ryan of Andrews Building Supplies. The Master, Fiona Woolf DBE, DL, presented the awards.

  • George was awarded a engraved tankard and a cheque for £1,000 as the ‘Best Performing BMF Diploma Student’, achieving the highest overall average score over nine modules.
  • The ‘Trade Supplier Apprentice of the Year’ award was won by Mason, and…
  • Adam was presented the ‘Best Online Student’ prize. Both received an engraved tankard and a cheque for £500.

We congratulate them all and wish them all the best in their future careers and development.
